A young woman from the French countryside enters Parisian literary society as the wife of an established writer known as Willy. When she begins writing for him, her stories find an audience under a name that is not her own. Success changes the household, but it does not settle the question of who deserves recognition or who gets to make the decisions. Colette’s growing confidence carries her beyond the boundaries of the marriage, into new relationships and forms of performance. Keira Knightley leads this period drama about creative labour, sexual independence and the practical struggle to own a public identity. The pleasures of a changing Paris sit beside the quieter work of learning to trust a voice other people have already found useful.
