Stella and Dot have been together for years, creating a shared life through affection, stubbornness and a refusal to behave as other people expect. When Dot’s granddaughter decides that a care home is the sensible next step, the couple see a more urgent need to leave. Their escape becomes a journey from Maine towards Canada, where they hope to marry and give their partnership a legal protection it has long lacked. Along the road they pick up a young hitchhiker whose company adds another perspective to their determined adventure. Thom Fitzgerald’s comedy treats later-life romance as something active and unruly, following two women whose desire to stay together makes them willing to challenge family plans and cross more than one boundary.
