Catherine begins to suspect that her husband is being unfaithful and hires Chloe to test the suspicion. What she intends as a controlled investigation becomes much harder to contain as Chloe returns with increasingly intimate accounts of their meetings. Catherine finds herself absorbed by the young woman's stories and drawn into a relationship she cannot easily explain to herself. Suspicion within a marriage gives way to a more dangerous uncertainty about desire, trust and who is directing the encounter. Atom Egoyan's thriller keeps the connection between its two women at the centre of a story in which reassurance is always just out of reach.
