Therese Belivet is working in a Manhattan department store when she meets Carol Aird, an elegant customer whose attention opens up a possibility she has barely allowed herself to imagine. Their connection develops through visits, conversations and a journey away from the city. Carol’s marriage is ending, and the arrangements surrounding her daughter place her private life under scrutiny. Therese, meanwhile, is learning to distinguish what she wants from the future other people have imagined for her. Set in the 1950s, the romance follows an attraction shaped by both difference and recognition. The women must consider the personal costs of desire in a society that treats their relationship as grounds for punishment.
