Lara lives in an isolated household where curiosity and desire are closely watched. The arrival of Carmilla, a young stranger brought into the home after an accident, disturbs that controlled world. Their growing intimacy offers Lara a first glimpse of feelings she has been taught to distrust. At the same time, the adults around her read the newcomer's presence through fear, discipline and superstition. As affection becomes entangled with suspicion, Lara must navigate competing accounts of what Carmilla represents and what her own desires mean. Emily Harris's period adaptation turns the Gothic story toward the uncertainty of awakening sexuality. The relationship between the two young women sits at the centre of its atmosphere of tenderness, repression and approaching danger.
