Jean has learned to divide her life into carefully separated parts. At school, she is a physical education teacher who keeps her private world out of view. Away from work, her girlfriend Viv and a community of queer friends offer a place where she can breathe. In 1988 England, the government’s campaign against the supposed promotion of homosexuality makes that separation feel increasingly necessary. When a pupil appears in the same social space Jean relies on, the boundaries begin to collapse. Georgia Oakley’s drama follows a lesbian woman negotiating the costs of concealment, with the student’s vulnerability forcing her to confront what self-protection can mean for someone who needs her support.
