Julie, Kayla and Sam have decided that prom night should mark a new stage in their lives. Their parents, having discovered a message they were never meant to read, set out to stop the evening from going according to plan. What follows is a collision between teenagers trying to make their own choices and adults struggling to accept that those choices may no longer include them. For Sam, keeping pace with her friends is complicated by feelings she has not yet found a comfortable way to discuss. Kay Cannon’s ensemble comedy treats that uncertainty as part of the larger question of who gets to define a milestone. Beneath the escalating mishaps are three different girls whose paths through the same night are far from interchangeable.
