Black Burns Fast

Luthando knows what is expected of her at an elite South African boarding school: protect her scholarship, earn excellent marks and avoid attracting the wrong kind of attention. The arrival of Ayanda makes that careful balance much harder to maintain. Their secret romance draws Luthando toward new friendships and a freedom she has rarely allowed herself, while putting pressure on her bond with her best friend and the expectations she carries from home. Sandulela Asanda’s coming-of-age comedy follows a young Black girl discovering desire, community and her own voice within an institution that rewards conformity. First love becomes part of a larger search for a life she can claim as her own.
