Billie arrives at a small-town Catholic school with short hair, a guitar and very little interest in making herself acceptable. Sent away to live with her aunt, she hopes to get through the days without attracting more attention. Emma, a successful student with a carefully mapped future, finds that difficult to allow. A school assignment brings them closer, and their growing attraction opens possibilities that sit awkwardly beside the rules and expectations around them. Set in the Philippines in the 1990s, Samantha Lee’s coming-of-age romance gives its teenagers room for humour, awkwardness and serious decisions. Their relationship develops within a world that offers strong opinions about what girls should do, while leaving them to work out what they actually want.
