In a Yorkshire mill town in 1957, Ellen Hardy’s daily life is organised around an unhappy marriage and her devotion to her young son Victor. His new teacher, Kathy Thompson, recognises the boy’s artistic promise and gradually becomes a source of encouragement for Ellen as well. Their growing friendship awakens feelings Ellen has little space to acknowledge within the expectations of her household. As the distance between her public duties and private hopes widens, she must consider what emotional freedom might cost. This period drama follows a quiet attraction across class boundaries, finding its tension in the things the women cannot easily say aloud.
