Benedetta enters a convent in seventeenth-century Tuscany carrying a deep religious conviction and a capacity for visions that unsettles those around her. The arrival of Bartolomea, a younger woman seeking refuge, introduces an attraction that cannot be contained within the convent’s expected forms of devotion. As their relationship becomes physical, Benedetta’s spiritual claims gain attention and place her within a struggle over religious authority. The women’s intimacy develops inside an institution where belief, discipline and political power are tightly connected. Paul Verhoeven’s historical drama follows a central sapphic relationship through that volatile setting, allowing sincere feeling and competing interpretations of events to remain difficult to disentangle.
