Beauty has spent years preparing to sing professionally, guided by parents whose ambitions and beliefs leave little space for uncertainty. A record deal promises the breakthrough they have been waiting for. It also introduces new demands about how she should sound, behave and present her private life. Her girlfriend Jasmine offers a connection that matters outside the industry’s calculations, but maintaining it becomes more difficult as the expectations surrounding Beauty harden. Andrew Dosunmu’s period drama follows a young Black queer performer at a point where opportunity and self-erasure can look alarmingly similar. The central question is how much of her own life she can keep when everyone around her has a version they want to sell.
