Mary Anning supports herself and her mother by searching the Dorset coast for fossils, selling her discoveries to visitors who rarely understand the work behind them. When a traveller asks her to take his wife Charlotte into her care, Mary reluctantly allows a stranger into her tightly ordered life. Their different circumstances initially keep them apart, but shared time gradually gives way to curiosity, tenderness, and desire. The connection offers both women a form of recognition they have been missing, even as class and expectation complicate what they can ask of each other. Set against the physical labour and isolation of coastal life, this imagined historical romance explores the possibilities and limits of an intimacy neither woman anticipated.
