After her father's death, Margaret Prior begins visiting women imprisoned at Millbank, hoping that useful work will give shape to her grief. Among the inmates, the spiritualist Selina Dawes holds her attention in a way Margaret has not anticipated. Their conversations become increasingly intimate, drawing Margaret towards promises of understanding and escape that seem unavailable in her respectable life. Yet every meeting takes place within a system of surveillance, and Selina's account of her past remains difficult to verify. Adapted from Sarah Waters's novel, this Victorian drama follows a woman's longing into a mystery where desire can sharpen perception as easily as it can cloud it.
