The Last Good City
2026
The story
Ellas Harding believes she lives in proof that humanity can improve. In Earth’s last surviving city, people have learned to value kindness over the violence of their past. Even Wargames, the annual festival built around that history, is an occasion for music, flowers and celebration. For an apprentice philosopher with a fascinating new lover, it ought to be an uncomplicated week. Then Ellas witnesses real violence, and Jones McCoy, the woman she is falling for, may be involved. Investigating means questioning both an intimate connection and the principles that hold her city together. With dangerous secrets threatening its carefully maintained peace, Ellas must work out what goodness means when it stops being an abstract idea and begins demanding choices she would rather avoid.
