The Disenchantment

Baroness Marie Catherine's marriage confines her to a role she performs more willingly than she inhabits. In seventeenth-century Paris, time away from her husband offers intellectual company, conversation and the company of Victoire, a confident noblewoman who becomes her lover. Their relationship suggests a life beyond the restrictions surrounding them, but freedom depends on secrecy. When a murder forces Marie Catherine to flee, the city's hidden networks become impossible to ignore. Aristocratic privilege, occult practices and private schemes connect people who have much to lose if exposed. Protecting the possibility of a future with Victoire means navigating a world where a concealed desire is only one of many dangerous secrets.
