Deputy U.S. Marshal Danny Martin expects her promotion to mean leading a team. Instead, she is sent to Florida to support Focus, an apparently immortal superhero and the woman Danny has admired since childhood. The assignment becomes stranger when Danny learns that Focus specifically requested her—and seems interested in a connection beyond work. Focus’s intense response to Danny being injured prompts questions about what the hero knows. Then a mission strands Danny thirty years in the past, near the beginning of Focus’s career. The woman she finds there is far less welcoming. Danny must navigate a relationship whose history is unfolding out of order, with no simple way to separate professional duty from personal longing.
