Nothing Sung and Nothing Spoken
2022
The story
Charlotte Kraus grows up in Berlin as Nazi power increasingly dictates what young people may hear, do and believe. Her connection with Angelika Haas opens a different world, one shaped by forbidden jazz and the defiant community of the Swingjugend. Music offers pleasure and a measure of freedom, while Charlotte’s feelings for Angelika introduce possibilities that the society around them refuses to accept. But private escape becomes harder to maintain as political danger reaches further into everyday life. Friendship, desire and resistance begin demanding choices with consequences neither girl can dismiss. Charlotte must work out what she is prepared to risk when preserving a place for herself means refusing the role others have assigned her.
