Leaving L.A.
2011
The story
Tessa Flanagan has stepped away from a successful film career to focus on her daughter Laya and a new life in philanthropy. Laya’s kindergarten teacher, Eleanor Chapin, seems an ideal choice for a summer nanny: direct, capable, and sensitive to the child’s need for privacy. Tessa expects the arrangement to protect the quieter life she wants. Eleanor regards Los Angeles as a temporary stop before graduate study, but the generous job offer—and the prospect of spending time with Tessa—makes delaying her plans tempting. Working within the household brings their connection closer than either anticipated. Both women must consider whether an arrangement designed around one summer can accommodate feelings that challenge the futures they have carefully planned.
