Seven years after the Atargatis disappeared while filming a mockumentary about mermaids, another expedition heads toward the Mariana Trench. The voyage promises to distinguish an elaborate hoax from an unexplained disaster. For scientist Victoria Stewart, whose sister was lost on the earlier ship, the questions are intensely personal. Researchers, specialists and a media team bring different ambitions aboard, including presenter Olivia Sanderson, whose path crosses Victoria's as the investigation develops. The ocean soon challenges assumptions about what the expedition has come to find. With evidence becoming harder to dismiss, scientific curiosity and the search for answers give way to a more immediate problem: understanding a threat before it overwhelms the people studying it.
