BETWEEN THE COVERS
The story
In 1923, a Broadway production of Sholem Asch's God of Vengeance becomes the center of an obscenity scandal after bringing a love story between two women to the stage. Paula Vogel's play follows the artists and audiences connected to that production, moving through the work's earlier life in Europe and its fraught reception in America. The controversy exposes pressures surrounding Jewish identity, censorship, sexuality, and the right to represent a community in all its complexity. At its heart is the persistence of an intimate story that others want silenced. Music and theatrical reinvention connect the performers across time as they struggle to keep that story alive.
