Detective Luce Allen investigates the disappearance of a woman after a clinic appointment, a case that touches concerns she cannot keep entirely professional. Her own connection to the clinic makes its circumstances difficult to dismiss, and the investigation draws her toward questions about the limits of institutional power and the people harmed by it. At the same time, her feelings for her closest friend, physician Kendra Jones, are becoming harder to contain. Kendra works at the clinic, placing their relationship near the center of Luce's worries. To find the missing woman, Luce must navigate evidence, personal vulnerability, and a political climate in which even basic choices are contested.
