Idlewild

At a small Quaker high school in lower Manhattan, Fay and Nell become inseparable in the aftermath of September 11. Their friendship develops through school theater, online conversations, fanfiction, and a shared habit of reading queer possibilities into everything around them. Nell is quietly in love with Fay, whose fascination with gay men leads in a different direction. Two boys involved in the school play draw the friends into an increasingly complicated web of projection and desire. Looking back as estranged adults, Fay and Nell revisit the misunderstandings and decisions that ended their closeness, tracing the gap between what they experienced together and what each believed it meant.
