Captive in the Underworld
2021
The story
Persephone longs for a life beyond Demeter’s relentless supervision. Her mother rejects every suitor and keeps a punishing hold over her future, leaving little room for independence. But when Queen Hades takes Persephone into the underworld, escape from one controlling household becomes confinement in another. Hades rules the dead without compromise and has no intention of releasing the goddess she desires. Persephone must navigate fear, dependence and an attraction that troubles her even as she yearns for sunlight and freedom. This dark sapphic retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth centers an explicitly coercive relationship. Its adult story includes abduction, abuse and intimate partner violence, rather than treating captivity as a harmless romantic obstacle.
