Charlene Mack has built a respected private investigation firm in Detroit through determination and careful judgement. Away from work, questions about her sexuality and her mother's early-onset Alzheimer's disease leave her on less certain ground. A missing-person case takes Charlie and her team to Birmingham, Alabama, where apparently routine enquiries encounter powerful people with old secrets. Answers become harder to find as the investigation turns violent, with a double murder and an attack on Charlie making the danger personal. She has skilled colleagues beside her, but the city offers few clear reasons to trust anyone else. Solving the case means finding a path through histories other people are determined to keep buried.
