Bingo Love
2018
The story
Hazel Johnson and Mari McCray first meet at church bingo in 1963, and their friendship becomes love. Their families and the society around them refuse to accept it, separating the girls and pushing them toward different futures. Decades later, after marriages and children, another bingo game brings them together. Recognizing each other is easy; deciding what to do with feelings that have survived so much is harder. Their reunion asks both women to consider what honesty could cost the families they have built. Tee Franklin’s graphic novel follows a Black queer love story across generations, exploring coming out later in life and the possibility of choosing a different future.
