The story
Recovering from a personal crisis, Margaret Prior begins visiting the women imprisoned at Millbank in Victorian London. Her charitable work introduces her to Selina Dawes, a spiritualist convicted after a séance ended in death and distress. Margaret is initially wary of Selina’s claims, yet fascination gradually becomes an attachment that unsettles the boundaries of her respectable life. The prison’s restrictions and the supposed possibility of contact beyond the material world sharpen her longing for escape. As Margaret becomes more invested in Selina’s story, she must decide what to believe and what she is prepared to risk. Desire, confinement and uncertainty surround a relationship in which freedom carries more than one meaning.
